What is ADD/ADHD?

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It’s most frequently diagnosed in children, but many people receive their initial ADHD diagnosis as adults.

In the past, the term attention-deficit disorder, or ADD, was used to describe cases where symptoms of hyperactivity weren’t present in patients who otherwise exhibited signs of ADHD.

At this time, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) only recognizes ADHD as a diagnosis, and ADD is now considered an outdated term.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

Symptoms of ADHD are different in adults and children and can vary significantly between individuals.

Some of the most common symptoms of ADHD include:

Inattention: Disorganization, difficulty listening, avoiding mentally demanding tasks

Hyperactivity: Fidgeting, constant movement, excessive talking

Impulsivity: Interrupting, making fast decisions, risky behavior

Children with ADHD often perform poorly at school and may have difficulty with social interactions.

Symptoms may be less severe in adults, but ADHD can still interfere with personal relationships and work performance and can lead to mental health problems and substance abuse. ADHD is associated with an increased risk of depression and anxiety in patients of all ages.
